Monolithic zirconia is prized for strength — which is exactly what makes an existing zirconia crown difficult to remove. Using the wrong bur means wasted chair time, excess heat and frustration. Here is how to choose.
Why standard burs struggle on zirconia
A standard tungsten-carbide bur can section softer restorations, but it dulls rapidly against sintered zirconia and builds heat. A general-purpose diamond fares better but wears quickly if it is not designed for ceramic.
What makes a zirconia removal bur different
- Aggressive, durable diamond grit that stays sharp on hard ceramic.
- Shapes built for sectioning: round-end taper, flame and football forms that slot through a crown and split it.
- Heat management: engineered to cut with less friction when used with adequate water spray.

A simple technique
- Use a coarse zirconia diamond to cut a buccal groove from occlusal to gingival, with copious water.
- Deepen the groove until you reach the cement layer, then use an instrument to wedge and split the crown.
- Switch to a medium or fine grit for any clean-up near the prepared tooth.
